NTIC research spotlighted by Chicago mayor and Federal Reserve

NTIC connects Chicago's rising foreclosures to increasing sub prime and predatory lending

In December, the National Training and Information Center held a Chicago Foreclosure Crisis Meeting and brought together community leaders, government officials, financial industry representatives and foundation stakeholders concerned about the financial and social impact of foreclosures in low-income and minority neighborhoods.

This meeting sparked great interest and concern about how to stop the increasing number of foreclosures. In January, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley traveled to the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual winter meeting and used NTIC's foreclosure research in his presentation on the health of families in Chicago's neighborhoods. In early February, Neighborhood Housing Services and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago convened a meeting of stakeholders and used NTIC's research to promote their new initiative for reusing vacant bank-owned properties that is the result of recent foreclosures. On February 27, the Chicago Tribune featured NTIC's research and showed how the research made the connection between the rise in foreclosures and surge in predatory and subprime lending.
