Anti-Hunger Training in Utah

Kelley Ford, NTIC’s Outreach Coordinator traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah in June to meet with the Anti-Hunger Action Committee to give two trainings on “Know your opposition” and “How to approach a neighborhood.” The sessions focused on effective strategies for raising awareness and winning on clearly defined issues that affect the group’s communities.

Anti-Hunger is working on the lack of health insurance in the state of Utah. They intend to move in favor of an amendment to the state constitution that would require Utah to make sure all citizens have access to basic health care.

Grassroots fundraising training for community radio

On June 10, NTIC’s Director of Development and Strategic Planning, Cathy Klump conducted a training for a Valparaiso, Ind. community radio station. The training focused on how WVLP staff and volunteers can build relationships locally that will enable the radio station to grow.

WVLP is a true testament to community-driven radio, featuring local amateur DJs speaking on various topics from bluegrass music to health and wellness to financial fitness. The station is supported almost entirely by donations of time and money.

There are strong connections between grassroots organizing and community radio, so many of the fundraising strategies are similar. Gail Parson, NTIC’s Community Reinvestment Organizer is a volunteer at the station and she is now participating in WVLP’s fundraising committee that is hard at work implementing the plan created at the training.

NTIC influences the servicing industry

In June, NTIC representatives were invited to participate in a two-day discussion with Ocwen Financial in West Palm Beach, Fla. to discuss Ocwen’s efforts at reducing their number of foreclosures and keeping people in their homes. NTIC was pleased to provide Ocwen with feedback and suggestions at the meeting and looks forward to a continued partnership.
